It was the right thing to do but, as with any severe action, the medical gains in containing the potential spread of the virus are slowly being outweighed by the massive costs in lost business. It shows just how fragile both our health systems and our economies really are. A brief pause in the large scale of time is a healthy thing, but for all of us involved in meeting human demand, from manufacturing cars to offering great tourist escapes, that pause is weighing heavily on lost income. In order to truly comprehend and correctly utilise your vehicle’s four-wheel drive systems out on the trail, one needs a basic understanding of certain generic ‘offroad’ concepts. So, prior to continuing on driving skills per se, this column deals with some terminology. I have endeavoured to limit the number of terms to those considered absolutely indispensable, and to distil this terminology to the simplest explanations possible particularly for our newbies (that said, you’re never too experienced to discover something new). I was damn glad that tonight we were looking for frogs and aquatic stuff in a croaking and groaning swamp, rather than rare snakes! I knew my companions would go ape if they found a deadly twig snake or mamba, but for now, I was happy the hunt was on for other goggas. Nobody said overlanding is for sissies, and our exit route from Angola was a stern test of this. It took three days to cover 160km of the worst road we had ever seen, as we plunged from one giant puddle to the next, each one threatening to tip Agnes onto her side. The final stretch to the Zambian border was the worst we had seen, and our racing engine warned the border official at the Jimbe gate, who raised the boom as we just made it to solid ground. There are two groups of people when it comes to modifying vehicles: those who modify for looks and the guys who do it out of necessity. At SA4x4, we tend to have more in common with the latter group. Space and weight are two key concerns in the overlanding and camping playbook. You need to conserve both. So it was interesting to pick up Tentco’s Caprivi 3 nylon tent. The entire tent packs into a bag of dimensions 65 x 12 x 14cm, and it weighs just 6.35kg. Nothing remarkable about that if you are looking at a high-end three-season or four-season hiking tent, which can withstand a huge storm, but is usually very cramped. The thing is, this tent pitches to a remarkably spacious 3.0 x 3.0 metre footprint, with a roof height at the apex of 1.8m. KUKONJE & BOTSWANA’S RIVER FLOWS I was most interested in reading the article on Botswana’s Hunter’s Road in the April issue of SA4x4. It certainly is a challenge with all that black cotton soil in the rains! In the article, the author mentioned that they visited Kukonje Island. Although more people are familiar with Kubu Island, I agree with the author that a visit to its sister Kukonje Island is worthwhile. Although both are located on Sowa Pan, the two islands are very different. Kubu is much smaller with rounded outcrops, boulders, and small cliffs of granite which are dotted with massive baobabs. In contrast, Kukonje is much larger and is made up of a flat horizontal sheet of dolerite, a blackish igneous rock. This has resulted in the formation…

It seems that a ‘must-have’ piece of equipment, which is often mounted on peoples’ 4x4s, is a winch. It most certainly has that ‘wow’ factor and makes you look like the ultimate adventurer. This piece of equipment has been available for decades, yet many owners have no idea how to operate it safely. Winches are used for lifting in industrial applications, as well as for pulling; think of overhead cranes lifting containers in the harbour, and the tow truck or flatbed that comes to pick your vehicle up after an accident or breakdown. I want to tell you about the Gugulesizwe Camp, a camp with a real heart. I can use fancy words about ‘watershed moments’ and ‘true joint ventures between community, conservation authorities, and ecotourism partners’. The rugged Tibesti Mountains are as far as you can get from civilisation in Africa. Situated in the centre of the Sahara, in northern Chad, it’s a long four-day 1 500km journey from the capital, N’Djamena, much of which is on tracks, or pistes, that is not for the faint-hearted. It’s not surprising, therefore, that the area attracts only a few hundred determined adventurers a year and, in 2016, I was to be one of them! The Amarok is a cleverly-engineered pickup. From launch in 2010, it was a step or two ahead of the rivals in terms of technology, if not ability. Whilst ‘growing younger’ sounds like the sales pitch for a new anti-ageing cosmetic, it is indeed a scientific fact. Well, in some insects at least! One of the weirdest phenomena in all of nature is the ability of certain insects to grow younger, or put another way, age in reverse. Termites are one such example; honey bees another. Termites practice division of labour via a caste system, with each caste having a specific task. Only the ‘royal couple’ are able to reproduce, whilst workers and soldiers forgo this ability in order to perform the tasks of foraging and protection for the good of the colony. Ants often raid termite nests, killing many of the soldier termites. This results in a disproportionate ratio of worker to soldier termites. The colony can…

TOYOTA FORTUNER The Epic treatment For 2020, Toyota has bestowed the revered Fortuner with a host of exterior additions and created the latest iteration – the new ‘Fortuner Epic’. I have enough information to write 10 articles about Johan Marais, South Africa’s well-known naturalist, snake man, entrepreneur, and photographer. He’s the author of the ‘A Complete Guide to the Snakes of Southern Africa.’ And, I believe, a new and updated edition is in the pipeline. I could tell you tales of how he started catching snakes near his home in Durban from the age of seven. Still catching anything that slithered or slid, he went on to become a cop in the Durban drug squad. It’s a long tale of adventure including field trips as far as Uganda, Namibia, and Mozambique. If I were only allowed to pack three items in a survival pack, they would be a knife, paracord, and duct tape. With these, I think you could surmount any catastrophe. It’s likely we know the origins of the knife and paracord (ok, if you don’t, paracord is used for parachute guylines), but what about duct (or duck) tape? What’s the story there? Yes, Jeep has dialled in 527kW and 875Nm from their infamous 6.2-litre Hemi V8, by coupling it with a 2.4-litre supercharger.
