Ryuichi Sakamoto was a man of many polarities; languid, yet cerebral, introverted, yet unwilling to conform. The role of the fashion designer is one that generally exists within the canon of modern history. Today, it survives as more of a metaphor than anything else. A singular figure responsible for the entire identity of a brand, rather than the many hands a garment passes through before being fully realised. Prior to the 19th century, if one wanted new clothing, they would have to know various people to bring an item to life: a tailor, a pattern maker, an embroiderer, a milliner, a cordwainer. When the International Surrealist Exhibition launched at New Burlington Galleries, London, in June of 1936, over 1000 people came to the opening. Salvador Dalí delivered a speech wearing a deep-sea diver’s suit, in which he almost suffocated, and had to be released from his helmet with a spanner. Dylan Thomas wandered through the crowd, who were keenly listening to André Breton’s opening address, holding a cup of boiled string. “Would you like it weak or strong?” he asked them. Herbal therapies have been central to the health, history and culture of First Nation communities for thousands of years. However, for the past three hundred years, due to various forms of colonialism, traditional plants, especially those heralded by First Nations people, have been demonised by the West as ‘pseudoscience’. It has only been in the past decade that First Nations herbalism has seen a resurgence in how we holistically discuss physical and mental healing – such as the use of cannabis for cancer pain and palliative care, and psychoactive drugs like LSD and mushrooms being scientifically acknowledged as ‘closer to medicinal use’. Desire Patrick Remy, (Steidl), 2000 I found this book at a second-hand book store and loved the choices and decisions made across the collection of images. The curation is distinctive and understood, and reminded me of the right way to think (which is to think with instinct) when trying to understand and communicate my own ideas. I like how every image is created with a delivery of risk and isn’t asking to be understood, but instead telling what they understand. Creating something like this offers so much to anyone else looking at it and I really liked that about this book.
