We know when to sense danger, when we’ve found ourselves in a precarious position, when the pasta might just be overcooking on the stove. There’s an instinct inside, circumnavigating us through life. Its contents are a collection of artistic correspondence documented in folders by Johnson’s lifetime friend, collector, and enabler William (Bill) S. Wilson, spanning over 55 years. After receiving this book as a gift, I couldn’t help but want to know more about the art and life of Johnson. “Degrees of literacy so often determine how we see what we see.” – bell hooks For the longest time, Western art was painted as something that existed to bring pleasure to those cultivated enough to understand it. It was bloated with its own self-importance. But it wasn’t the art’s fault. Nor was it entirely Kenneth Clark’s. Yet, a certain John Berger liked to think the art historian had a hand in it. In 1969, Clark released a 13-hour BBC series called Civilisation, making him an easy clay pigeon. The blockbuster celebrated the “genius” of European, mostly male, mostly white artists. It was every bit as outsized as the name suggests. It was Clark’s upper-crust self-styled connoisseurship that grated on Berger most.
