With its new Shibuya Upper West Project, Snøhetta is taking on its largest project to date in Japan. The 117,000 m² skyscraper complex will include a luxury hotel, retail units and residential units, as well as art and cultural spaces. The new landmark is being built at the intersection of the dynamic Shibuya district, cultural quarters and quieter residential areas. The design captures, among other elements, the careful balance in Japanese culture between tradition and modernity, while its ascending terraced form takes inspiration from Mount Fuji. The ceramic façade pays tribute to local building practices, and an atrium and roof terraces with lush planting provide visitors with space to relax and take a breath.
