FROM TIPS to Alun Wyn, Josh to Sanjay, the names of the Wales XV trip off the tongue. Wyn Jones, the incumbent loosehead prop and every inch their equal, is less celebrated. In fact, you suspect that if citing Welsh internationals was a topic on a certain BBC quiz show, he’d be a pointless answer.
Before this year, the 27-year-old had started just one Test for Wales – against Tonga – and as recently as last spring he was third choice in his position behind Rob Evans and Nicky Smith. Yet the robust efficiency with which Jones goes about his work – his scrummaging, lifting, jackaling, contact fitness – did not go unnoticed. Come the World Cup, Warren Gatland knew Jones had to play.
