Forced to retire in 1997 due to a shoulder injury, Gold was a hooker with the Defence Force while in the Army, then around Cape Town’s club scene with False Bay, Hamilton and Villagers.
Coaching background
Gold has shifted around, hungry for new experiences. He served as a forwards coach at London Irish, Western Province and the Springboks, as well as being the man in charge at Newcastle, Bath, Kobelco Steelers, the Sharks in his native South Africa, Worcester Warriors and then USA Eagles.
