BUCKSWOOD SCHOOL in East Sussex won nine out of ten 1st XV games last term – despite having a polyglot team of ten different nationalities, several of whom only started playing a year ago. They have Mexican, Lithuanian, Latvian, French, Colombian, Russian, Dutch, Spanish, Italian and English team members. “It’s often a case of coaching basic English first, how to pass, catch and tackle second, while simultaneously trying to coach team play,” says head of rugby Kit Claughton. “We always get a few players who throw the ball over the line in ‘touchdown’ mode at the start of the season, and we have to work hard to drill breakdowns, but it works.” Buckswood 1sts had three European U18 internationals this year – a Czech and two Lithuanians.
