TRIALS riding originated in Scotland in the early 20th century. Unlike other forms of motorcycle sport, observed trials (to give the sport its traditional name) is not racing, although it is certainly competitive.
Instead, trials (or trial) is a sport of balance, skill and concentration. One at a time, competitors ride over an obstacle course of boulders, streams, hill climbs, logs, drop-offs and nearly anything else the organisers can find, with riders losing points for every instance he or she ‘dabs’ or touches the ground. With low speeds and no other competitors on the track, it is the safest form of motorcycle sport and, according to convening body Trials Australia, the world’s most popular.
