CLARKSON, OHIO, WHERE I grew up in the’70s, was the epitome of smalltown USA. There was one crossroad, one streetlight on the cement pad where every kid hung out, and everyone knew everything about everybody. My grandfather bought my first pony for my fifth birthday. When I was 16, I met one of my musical heroes—Louis Armstrong, one of the alltime greats of jazz. The occasion was a concert given by Louis Armstrong & His All-Stars on Nov. 24, 1956, at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. A junior at nearby Whitehall High School, I was sports editor of the school newspaper. Our faculty adviser knew I was into jazz and suggested that I interview Armstrong. My dad was active in many civic associations and knew the sponsors of the concert, so I was granted access to the band’s dressing room. My favorite of Armstrong’s albums was one he made a year earlier. Called Ambassador Satch, it was recorded in 1955 in Europe while Armstrong and his band were touring as cultural diplomats for the U.S.…

SOME OF MY BEST memories are of my own backyard at 85 Orange St. in Waltham, Massachusetts, in the 1950s. It felt like a great expanse that seemed to go on as far as the eye could see. It was the center of activity for the entire neighborhood. We spent long hours playing army, building push carts and having shooting competitions with my Daisy Red Ryder BB gun. And, no, I didn’t shoot my eye out! There was a grassy area where we played outdoor games or set up the pup tent. We would collect grasshoppers from the garden and put them in a pickle jar. Bragging rights went to the kid with the largest catch. In the winter, we built forts and had snowball fights. I wouldn’t trade those…

Aunt Harriett, as I called her (she was my mother’s cousin), was raised on a dairy farm in Ortonville, Michigan. Her father was head of the Dairy Farmers Association, and Harriett was very active with 4-H. I have her scrapbook: The first entry is dated 1933. She started her own neighborhood club, the Oak Hill Sheep and Dairy Club, named for the family’s farm on Oak Hill Road. My crime took shape when I went to find Norman, one of my friends from first grade. We usually played tag or hopscotch. I could see his mother inside their house, putting fresh cookies on a plate. I really wanted one, but back in’52, it was rude for a kid to ask for something that hadn’t been offered. I asked if Norman could play with me and our friend Mikey. But his mother told us they were leaving, so Mikey and I stood and watched as Norman’s family drove away. I was usually very shy, but suddenly I said, “Mikey, we’ve got to get those cookies.” Mikey never said much, but I could tell he didn’t like this. When Annette Funicello put on mouse ears for the new Disney variety show Mickey Mouse Club, she quickly became the favorite of the ensemble. She got her own spinoff series, Annette, in 1958, taking the first steps toward a recording career with the hit “How Will I Know My Love?” She traded the ears for a bikini in several beach party musicals with Frankie Avalon, achieving peak fame as a teen queen. Emma Petty was a quiet girl, and she usually had a book in her hand. She was also pretty, but to be honest, when I went to her house one Saturday afternoon in the summer of 1954, I wasn’t expecting to ask her on a date. I wanted to go to a baseball game with her brother Paul. He wasn’t home, so I asked Emma to go with me instead. I found out later through her sisters that she didn’t intend to go out with me, either. When she disappeared in the house, supposedly to ask her mother’s permission, she was looking for an excuse to politely decline. Having escaped hardship in their native countries, many immigrants volunteered for military service in America. Hundreds of thousands—especially German and Irish—enlisted in the Union armies. James Deery arrived on the ship Princeton of New York with an older man of the same name. What were his thoughts when he came ashore? We know he brought a heritage of love and loyalty, and was one of those willing to sacrifice for his adopted country. The National Park Service website confirms Deery was part of the 6th Regiment, U.S. Cavalry (regular army). The regiment’s motto: “Led by Love of Country.” At the start of the war, the cavalry was limited to patrolling, scouting, guarding supplies and escorting officers. However, by 1863 the men were serving as fighters. The 6th Regiment suffered heavy…

MY FRIEND STEVE ROGALSKI and I grew up together in Beallsville, Ohio, in the’60s. We were in 4-H and in 1966 we chose as our project a demonstration of basic first-aid bandages. Somehow that work at the county level qualified us for a trip to the Ohio State Fair. Going to the big city to present to a large audience was intimidating. When it was our turn on the stage, we were given microphones to use, which had not been part of our practice routine. As I demonstrated how to properly apply a sling to my victim, Steve, the microphone cord became tangled and got caught in the bandage: In one quick move, Steve had been slinged and wired.
