Hearing stories about my grandparents ignited a lifelong interest in genealogy. My husband, Dennis, also enjoyed sharing family stories. His grandfather, Dr. Charles Wallingsford, was an avid family researcher. Long after his death, the documents he compiled are still available online. One of the documents reads: “From American records we learn that Nicholas Wallingford, a lad of 19 years, sailed from Southampton, England, on the ship Confidence, and landed at Boston, Massachusetts, in April 1638.” Dennis’ grandfather further noted spelling variations in the family name: Wallington, Wellington and Wallingford, with or without the “s.” I had just finished the research about my own ancestors, the John Bent family. as the weather starts to warm up, my memories always take me back to the public swimming pool in our neighborhood. That was the center of the universe for the kids of the Lindenwald district of Hamilton in the summers of the 1960s. Richardson), 28—to Fargo, North Dakota, their next tour stop. Each had paid $36—about $300 today—for a place on the four-seater plane. Holly’s backup band, initially scheduled to fly with him, consisted of two then-unknown musicians, guitarist Tommy Allsup and bassist Waylon Jennings. I NEVER PLAYED baseball. But in 1955 I developed a huge interest in the game. A number of 16-year-old boys in the area formed a baseball team sponsored by the American Legion. My son Gary, who was crazy about baseball, was chosen as the pitcher for the team. Gary spent a lot of time at home practicing for games. He drew a rectangle on one of our farm buildings and threw at it to hit the strike zone. Of course, the building suffered some damage. When pitching, Gary was either hot or cold. If cold, he was replaced by a relief pitcher. When hot, he could strike out 19 of a possible 21 batters (they played seveninning games). Players’ families sat in the bleachers to cheer the team on. My parents and grandparents liked to vacation on lakes in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. They also loved to catch and eat fish. So when I was young I could hardly wait for my grandpa to take me fishing. When I got older, I couldn’t remember where the photo of Grandpa and me standing on a dock was taken. But as I stared at the picture, I noticed a name on the side of the boat. Looking more closely, I recognized the words “Rest Point,” but didn’t see any other identifying marks. I mentioned this to my sister, and she told me she thought she had the same picture in a photo album our mother had given her. After finding it, she called to tell me that the writing on the…

The manifest on which Dennis’ and Sharon’s ancestors’ names appeared shows John Bent, 35, traveling with his family. His occupation, husbandman, suggests he was a farmer. Nicholas Wallington, a servant, was listed simply as “a poor boy.” Ship quarters were tight, so it is highly likely that these passengers’ paths crossed. back in 1942, my grandparents bought property in Waupaca, Wisconsin, an area known as the Chain o’ Lakes—Poppy’s 2Q acres were on Lake Orlando on the Little Chain. Even in his early years, John Belushi was a funny guy. I went to Wheaton Central High School in Wheaton, Illinois, where I was two years ahead of him. John and I participated every spring in the high school talent show, so I got to see him in action. It was a lot of work with nightly rehearsals, but so much fun. Tractor manufacturer Allis-Chalmers Corp. started as an iron foundry and machine shop in Milwaukee, WI, in 1847. 1950 A UTILITY VEHICLE FOR EVERYONE Willys-Overland’s Jeep wagon, introduced in 1946, competed favorably with Detroit makers’ wood-sided wagons by offering four-wheel drive, removable seats for more storage and an almost indestructible steel body. When I was 13, my parents decided to take my 9-year-old brother, Barry, and me on a trip to Canada. Before we left Massachusetts, we stopped for a fill-up. The station owner—a friend of Dad’s—suggested we stay at a place he knew just over the border. “It’s run by some nuns,” he added. This was 1960, so navigation was done via giant folding map.
