Growing up in a large family with five brothers and a sister, I learned many lessons about sharing. Whenever we get together now, we share memories about the neighborhood where we grew up, our childhood pets, my father’s penchant for flea marketing and my mother’s infamous stacks of paperbacks. Everyone has a story, and telling the favorites can get pretty rowdy. One brother starts a tale, another riffs on the theme, I wave my hands while giving my version of what happened, and everyone laughs at the antics. In this 25th anniversary issue, Reminisce shares fun facts collected from the past paired with recollections of your favorite decades. Recently, a neighbor of ours from the 1940s commented, “We were rich. WHAT THE LOCALS ATE AT THE DAIRY BAR When I was young, my folks always took me to visit my grandparents in Lansing, Ohio. My favorite place to hang out with my friends was Krob’s Dairy Bar on Route 40. Everyone went there for the food—hamburgers, ice cream, cherry Cokes, and homemade soups and chili. Older kids would come in after ballgames to hang out and play songs on the jukebox. Every once in a while, future baseball greats Phil and Joe Niekro would visit the dairy bar. Other times, we would see future basketball star John Havlicek come in and sit at the counter. The guys were always friendly and polite. WHAT IS KOREA? WHERE IS KOREA? That’s what the students from my high school graduating class in Falconer, New York, were saying. I graduated in June 1950. In January 1951, I enlisted in the Marines. All who entered the Marine Corps had to take boot training (14 weeks at Parris Island for me). This is the price list of my first clothing issue. As you can see, it cost Uncle Sam $51.61 to dress a recruit in 1951. I also found the list of items I got from the supply shed in 1953. I thought there might be an old jarhead somewhere who would get a chuckle from these records.…

ON A HAPPY TRAIL WITH HER TRUSTY SIDEKICK The late ’40s were the most magical time of my life. It was all about cowboys—the good guys vs. the bad. I had a plethora of good guys on my side—the Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, the Cisco Kid. These guys were my partners. With my six-gun strapped to my side, I was ready to fight for justice if only someone would ask me. And then there was Roy Rogers. He was undeniably the king of the cowboys and of my heart. He wore working-cowboy outfits: checkered shirts, jeans, boots and his famous white hat. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love Star Trek . Dentist Recommends Vinegar I have some useful advice that others may be interested in. When I got my Dentures several years ago, the Dentist told me use vinegar to get the plaque off them. So - about once a week I soak them in the wonder liquid and Presto - they sparkle. I went to college at Syracuse University, where it was all business and traditions. Women dressed in heels, skirts, gloves and, often, hats, and we all worked hard. My dad (in red) loved Mount Rainier National Park in Washington. In his younger days, he climbed far up Rainier itself (background). This 1957 photo shows him on a favorite hike, at the top of Pinnacle Peak. Though Dad died in ’86, he seems very present to me when I see this picture. TRIVIAL MATTERS One night my mother, my sister and I decided to play a fast-paced trivia game in which you move a peg after each question: forward if your answer is right, backward if wrong. OUR COUSINS JERRY AND ARTIS PHILLIPS grew up near my brothers and me just west of Lake Worth, Texas. Their dad owned a small gas station—sized just right for kids to play around the pumps—on the Jacksboro Highway.
