I ATTENDED a one-room school located between Hutchinson and Stewart, Minnesota. In 1939, I graduated from the eighth grade. My school did not have electricity or running water. The boys carried the water, wood, and coal for the stove, and the girls cleaned the blackboards and floors. We had an outdoor toilet, which was very cold in those Minnesota winters. Our teacher taught all eight grades and all subjects, including arithmetic, science, current events, geography, spelling, penmanship, reading, writing, music, and shop.
My class recently celebrated our 70th reunion. With every student (all four of us) and our teacher there together, we had 100 percent attendance! The memories that came back ...…
