BABY NEEDS A NEW PAIR OF SHOES JOYCE T. ROLLINS DERRY, NH HOLIDAY HAND-ME-DOWNS were normal for me. Around Easter time when I was eight years old, my mother announced that we were going to Parke Snow for a new outfit. As I was the youngest in the family, this was the adventure of a lifetime. Ma picked out a blue dotted swiss dress with a velveteen bodice and sash that tied in the back. I also got new Mary Jane patent leather shoes. No more of the brown oxfords I’d had all my life. A white straw hat with a blue grosgrain ribbon around the brim and a pansy tucked into the side finished off the outfit. On Easter morning, I slowly got dressed and looked in the mirror.…

FRANK AND I were the wingmen for Captain Whitling, and our section had been sent in to help infantry that was taking sniper fire. While Frank and I were flying along the Laotian border looking for enemy activity, I marveled at the contrast between the Laotian and South Vietnamese countryside until I noticed a truck coming over the top of the ridge. The ground commander told us it had to be an enemy vehicle. Frank rolled into a very steep dive and fired rockets. The first pair went wild, but the second, third, and fourth pairs went right into the tree where the truck was hiding. As we pulled out, the North Vietnamese soldiers unloaded their AK-47s. Mama (actress Peggy Wood) was featured and made the viewers believe that she actually served this superior beverage to her family. I said OK, so the date was on for that coming Saturday. My friend, her date, and I arrived at precisely the given hour. I went to the door and rang the bell. The most beautiful girl answered. “I’m Jack,” I said. “Are you ready to go?” She responded, “My daughter will be down in just a few minutes.” I nearly collapsed with embarrassment. IN MY YOUTH, my mother owned a yellow Jeepster that she nicknamed the Little Hornet. One afternoon, as we were driving home from my school, we stopped at a light, and a huge truck with slatted sides pulled up alongside us. The wind blew an undeniable stink into the hot air, but the truck seemed to be sheltering us. Then a loud mooing sound came from Mom’s side of the car. The combination clicked into place like a precision clock striking the hour: loud cow noises, strong wind, open slats on the truck, and inevitably, a release of slimy cow dung raining into the Hornet. APRIL 1943: DRAPED IN DENIM and swigging from Mason jars, nine female “wipers” take a break from hosing down locomotives in the Chicago & Northwestern railroad’s Clinton, Iowa, roundhouse. More than two million American women worked in war industries by 1945, changing the face of factory labor as we knew it. Photographer Jack Delano’s vivid color image (shot on assignment for the Farm Security Administration) survives in the Library of Congress as a humanizing vision of these real-life Rosie the Riveters. “I thought I could portray ordinary working people in photographs with the same compassion and understanding that Van Gogh had shown for the peasants of Holland with pencil and paintbrush,” Delano wrote in his autobiography. WHILE STATIONED WITH the Air Force in eastern Maine, I fell in love with a girl in Quebec. We didn’t get to see each other often, which made each visit incredibly special. She spoke very little English, and I didn’t know any French. When we had trouble communicating, I would use sign language. I told her, “The smile on your round face is like sunshine to me.” I signed to her until she understood. A GAMBLE ON KINDNESS My older brother Nick got drafted at 21, a year after the Korean War began. While stationed in Linz, Austria, he observed a craps game among a group of soldiers one night. A heavyset master sergeant didn’t have enough money to call the bet. Out of the blue, Nick handed him the cash. The sergeant won the pot. Turns out the sergeant was a top man in personnel. Nick was transferred to Leghorn, on the coast in sunny Italy, where he lived in a hotel for six months until some billets were built. WE MADE OUR BED ... My sister Alyne and I shared a room and a bed for the first 18 years of my life. In our teen years, we were enamored of the glamour of anything about the movies. Somewhere we heard about a Hollywood Bed, which had a headboard but no foot-board. Well, our metal tubular bed had both, and we decided that we could easily emulate this fad by borrowing our dad’s hacksaw and cutting away.
