I WAS FIRST turned on to Buddy Holly while stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, in Missouri, and I instantly became a fan. After the Army, I attended Marquette University, in Milwaukee. On January 29, 1959, when I was a freshman, two of my friends and I got tickets to see Buddy play at George Devine’s Million Dollar Ballroom on a cold, snowy day. Also on the bill were Ritchie Valens, J. P. “the Big Bopper” Richardson, Dion and the Belmonts, and Buddy’s backup band, which included a young Waylon Jennings. It was a sold-out show, and the musicians did not disappoint.
I had brought my autograph book with me just in case, so after the show, my friends and I ran to the back where the bands’ buses were parked.…
