I MET MY husband when we were both in the fifth grade, but I didn’t fall in love with him until I was 14. During the Korean War, Manny was in the Army. In the beginning, I didn’t know where he was stationed or where he was going to be deployed. I wrote to him every day on a roll of teletype paper. I ended the letter on the same roll and continued this until I had an address to send it to. After 11 days, I received a letter from Manny from Tacoma, Washington. He was going to be deployed to an unknown location. Around Valentine’s Day, I was finally able to send him my letter, which by that time was 51 feet long. As he was reading it,…

THESE PHOTOS capture the military legacy of the Daniels family. Our service started in 1918 with my father, Pvt. Lawrence C. Daniels, in World War I. My World War II basic training was with the U.S. Army at a camp in Fairmin, Texas, near Smith County. I went on to serve for 26 years. The legacy continued with my son, Pvt. David D. Daniels, who served in Korea. And lastly, my grandson, Pvt. Zhackary D. Daniels, completed boot camp in 2014.…

I WAS FIRST turned on to Buddy Holly while stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, in Missouri, and I instantly became a fan. After the Army, I attended Marquette University, in Milwaukee. On January 29, 1959, when I was a freshman, two of my friends and I got tickets to see Buddy play at George Devine’s Million Dollar Ballroom on a cold, snowy day. Also on the bill were Ritchie Valens, J. P. “the Big Bopper” Richardson, Dion and the Belmonts, and Buddy’s backup band, which included a young Waylon Jennings. It was a sold-out show, and the musicians did not disappoint. I had brought my autograph book with me just in case, so after the show, my friends and I ran to the back where the bands’ buses were parked.…

SCANDALOUS! JEANNETTE BAINES WEST COVINA, CA IN THE 1920S, the one-piece bathing suit design saved women from the old Victorian wool dress and bloomers they needed to wear for a fun day in the surf. The new stylish swimsuit exposed a scandalous amount of skin. So much so that in Washington, DC, the superintendent of Public Buildings and Grounds issued an order that the hem of a swimsuit could not be more than six inches above the knee. FLORENCE OWENS THOMPSON was born in a teepee in Indian Territory, Oklahoma, in 1903. By the time photographer Dorothea Lange met her, in 1936, she was a widowed pea picker living in a tent in Nipomo, California, and had just sold her car tires to feed her seven children. “She seemed to know that my pictures might help her,” Lange said after the photo, Migrant Mother, became an iconic image of Dust Bowl poverty, “and so she helped me.” Though Thompson never saw a cent from Lange’s photo, she worked her way into the middle class. Even though she could have afforded a house, she chose to live in a trailer. “I need to have wheels under me,” Thompson said.…

IT WAS AN unusually warm evening for October but not uncommon for Charleston, South Carolina. I was a student at St. Francis Xavier School of Nursing. The nuns were giving the students a square dance that evening, and they invited the local cadets from the Citadel to join us. I didn’t know how to square-dance, so I clung to the wall, afraid to be noticed. A lack of knowledge didn’t stop the other students. The music and laughter floated all around, tempting me. There was a cadet hanging on to the opposite wall. The caller stopped the music and pointed to us. He wouldn’t take no for an answer! IN THE SUMMER OF ’64, my husband was stationed at the Marine base at Twentynine Palms, in California. On his day off, we were driving to a hiking trail with my nine-month-old baby and friends when we noticed motion picture trucks and cameras pulled over by a bar, the name of which had been changed to the Belly Button Club. Curious, we pulled over, and there, taking a break from filming the comedy Kiss Me, Stupid, were Dean Martin and Kim Novak. Dean motioned to me and yelled out, “Let me see that little guy.” He reached out and cradled my child in his arms. He couldn’t have been nicer and even introduced us to Kim. THE DAY DAD CRIED Our family was young when World War II started, but my oldest brother, Bobby, was 18 and in harm’s way. Dad suggested he join the Navy, noting, “You get good meals and a regular routine aboard a ship.” So Bobby joined as a radar operator in 1943. We got regular letters from him until the Normandy invasion the following June. We knew Bobby would be part of the assault, so we had the radio on constantly for weeks. Dentist Recommends Vinegar I have some useful advice that others may be interested in. When I got my Dentures several years ago, the Dentist told me use vinegar to get the plaque off them. So - about once a week I soak them in the wonder liquid and Presto - they sparkle. I have since gotten implants - Since I am not fond of the hygienist scraping the posts for cleaning - I clean them with Vinegar before going for my check-up. WUTHERING HEIGHTS My husband, Dave, and I always enjoyed watching Wuthering Heights . We were awed that after Cathy died, she joined her departed Heathcliff to walk together along the moor. Dave and I had walked nearly every evening along a country road edged by a river. We talked about each day’s happenings and admired the pink- and purple-streaked sunsets. From spring through fall, the quiet was broken by only bird chirps. In winter, snowflakes melted on our faces as crows cawed. Our evening walks punctuated our busy days. RITUAL HUMILIATION It was a Friday night in 1945. Mom and Dad took me to synagogue for our Sabbath service. The rabbi called me up to say the prayer over a silver goblet of wine. Simple Vinegar used to reduce cervical cancer deaths by 31% The latest study about vinegar, shows it will prevent an estimated 72,600 deaths from cervical cancer each year. This according to a study released at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in Chicago, IL.
