Discovering how an area got its name can be relatively easy. Perhaps the name describes a nearby hill or stream, or even one of its earliest settlers. You can locate old towns on out-of-print maps often found at thrift stores, on eBay or at garage sales. I used a 1911 Rand McNally map when researching Winkler, Elliott County, Kentucky, the town where my grandparents were born and married. Swedish entrepreneur Lars Magnus Ericsson started his telecommunications company in 1876. The first Swedish phone to have its own name, the one-piece machine was first called the Erifon, then the Ericofon (its offical designation), and finally, consumers called it the Cobra. Growing up in the 1950s, I became fascinated with antique cars. My father and I would build Revell Highway Pioneers plastic model car series in 1/32 scale. Out of that grew my interest both in old cars and model building. I’ve been building models all my life—for myself, other collectors and even a museum. My collection of 16 real antique cars began with a 1930 Model A Ford purchased in 1967. The Model A is the youngest of my cars; the oldest is this tiller-steered vehicle, originally sold by a large mail-order retailer. When Bette Midler’s rendition of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” became an Atlantic Records Top 10 single in 1973, a new generation of music fans embraced an iconic tune whose origins had faded. The popular Andrews Sisters—LaVerne, Maxene and Patty—had harmonized the song in the 1941 Abbott and Costello film Buck Privates. The bouncy ditty became a patriotic Decca Records smash for the beloved sibling warblers. One of the first phones I used when we lived near Frontier, Michigan, was a red Swedish-designed telephone, the Ericofon, with a rotary dial on the bottom. I looked it up online recently and saw that one was selling for $219 on Amazon. I was 7 in 1958 when my parents got ours. I liked it because it was all one piece, and with the rotary part set into the bottom, it was so easy to dial. Thirty years later, in 1988, I used a desktop phone with a handset and base made of clear molded plastic. The edge around the base lit up blue when you used it.
