Samuel Leeds Allen invents the Flexible Flyer sled, and his company, S.L. Allen Co., starts producing the recreational toy with weak-in-the-middle runners to allow for bending and steering.

Macy’s in New York and Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia place big Christmas orders for Flexible Flyer sleds.
1904
The Standard Novelty Works of Duncannon, Pennsylvania, launches its Lightning Guider and Challenger sleds, eventually producing 1,800 per day.
1915
The S.L. Allen Co. sells 2,000 Flexible Flyers a day in peak season.
Late 1970s
Banner years for Standard Novelty, with 100,000 sleds sold during the season, and Flexible Flyer, with 500,000 sold.
1990
Standard Novelty is out of business.
2005
The manufacturing rights to the Flexible Flyer brand are sold to Paricon LLC in South Paris, Maine, which still sells the sleds.…
