Early on September 5, 1972, a group of Palestinian terrorists stormed the Olympic village, killing two Israeli athletes and taking nine hostages. This group, known as Black Sep-tember, demanded the release of 230 Arab prisoners and two German terrorists. The massacre escalated at the Munich airport, resulting in all nine hostages, five terrorists, and one German police officer dead. Activated as a military installation on July 1, 1917, today the Selfridge Air National Guard (ANG) Base remains one of the nation’s oldest and most historic military installations. Located just off Lake St. Clair about 20 miles north of Detroit, it’s the largest ANG base in the country, and all branches of the military — active and reserve units alike — are represented here. The base is named after aviation pioneer Lt. Thomas E. Selfridge, who has the distinction of being the first U.S. Military officer to pilot an engine-driven aircraft and sadly was the first to meet his death in powered flight. We’ve all heard about the dangers faced by cops facing off with laser pointer-wielding protesters throughout the second half of 2020. But, as much as lasers are an everyday threat to warfighters and law enforcement officers, they’ve also become a valuable tool. Sergeant John Chapman is a patrol and SWAT officer and trainer with the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Department and says he and his fellow officers have come to embrace the use of lasers in daily operations. Anyone who has owned a classic car or truck knows that they come with some trade-offs. On the plus side, they tend to be astonishingly simple, at least by modern standards. In the United States, silencers are somewhat special even among NFA items. It’s a consumable item that’ll eventually be worn out with enough use. And even if that silencer is kept in good condition, it still degrades in relative performance as newer, quieter, lighter, and better cans are released. Combine all of the above with the fact that any individual NFA sales that are out of state require two tax stamps (in-state is only one) and you begin to understand why the secondary market for silencers is virtually non-existent.
