The end of D821 Greyhound’s British Rail career came on December 3, 1972, when it worked its last revenue-earning service in charge of 6Z10, the 15.30 Bristol to Plymouth additional Christmas parcels train. The locomotive was withdrawn the following day, alongside D810 Cockade, D812 The Royal Navy Reserve 1859-1959 and D824 Highflyer. But unlike the other three Class 42s, D821 was to survive the threat of scrapping.

D821 was purchased for preservation in early 1973 by Colin Massingham under the name of Modern Traction Kits, who had sought financial assistance from his father, Brian, along with Chris Reid and his father William, Norman Cousens, and Richard (Dick) Turpin, who became the first six shareholders.
