ON DECEMBER 1, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) confirmed that it had approved the application by new open access operator, Grand Union Trains, to run rail services between London and South Wales. As a result, GWR is likely to face competition on the route between London Paddington, Bristol Parkway, Severn Tunnel Junction, Newport, Cardiff, Gowerton, Llanelli and Carmarthen.
Five GU trains are expected to run daily, with new-build bi-mode trains, though details of these have yet to be revealed. GU’s contract will run for 10 years.
