The schedule for the World Endurance Championship (WEC) has been thrown into disarray with the cancellation of the opening round in Sebring, Florida in March, replaced by Portimao that was confirmed early in March and then delayed to June, and moving the Le Mans 24 Hours to August.
The decision to confirm Portimao over alternatives at Paul Ricard in France and Barcelona in Spain was, according to sources, due to the ability to host a pre-season test the preceding weekend to the race. However, travel between Portugal and the UK, where teams, drivers, engine suppliers, brake suppliers, tyre suppliers and gearbox suppliers are based, were suspended due to Covid numbers. The UK government also stipulated a quarantine period in a hotel upon return.
