Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Pressing tabs indicate the direction to press the seam allowances. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½” smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances. In 1987, I got married and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. I love the desert scenery here and will still take the intense, ridiculous summer heat of Phoenix over the frigid winter days of Ottawa. This inspired Coventry. My quilt recreates a spectacular coverlet of yesteryear in patchwork. The complex pattern can be broken down into individual blocks based on a 1½” grid. The result is a fabulous two-color quilt that is at once traditional and contemporary. The concentric rings provide movement and harmony and are my favorite part of this design. With the sharp contrast of fabulous red and white (okay, light gray) fabrics, the intricate design sparkles and glows. Kolams are geometric designs created with rice powder at the entrance of homes in South India, with a fresh design produced each morning by the lady of the house. They are built around an array of dots, with straight lines connecting some areas and curves meandering in others. Thinking of the intricate Kolam designs I had seen my grandmothers create during trips to India inspired my attempt at creating a quilted Kolam motif myself.
