And this got me thinking, do we have an equivalent in the quilting world? Is there a quilting design with the same universal appeal, simplicity, and versatility to fit almost any quilt? After pondering this for a few days, I realized, yes, we do have a little-black-dress equivalent—straight-line quilting. Straight lines are simple, streamlined, and wonderfully easy to quilt. You can use lines to accent your patchwork, elevating triangle points and interesting angles, even if the piecing isn't perfect. Need a quilt finished in a tight time limit? How many lines of quilting do our quilts actually need? Horizontal and vertical lines stitched in a large-scale grid will finish your project in a matter of hours. Change of Heart I made a quilt from the January/February ‘22 issue of Quiltmaker. I have a granddaughter turning 10 in July of this year, and she really likes mermaids. When I saw the Change of Heart pattern, I thought it would look great in mermaid colors for her. I used just 20 blocks with a plain teal border, finishing it at 59” x 71”. It was a lot of fun choosing the various fabrics for the hearts—new ones as well as many from my stash. I used a mermaid minky for the backing. After quilting in the ditch around the blocks, I outlined the hearts twice, stitched wavy lines through the sashing, and used a template to draw the quilting lines on the teal border. A City Girl in the Country I spent half my growing-up years in the Chicago ‘burbs and the other half in a town outside of Boise, Idaho. There's a lot of disparity between the two.
