I’d like to begin with a celebration. This issue marks Quiltmaker’s 200th issue. Our magazine has evolved over the years, but it remains a steadfast part of the quilting community. What an amazing accomplishment by all of the talented people who have worked on this publication over the course of 39 years, with a very special thanks to our founder, Bonnie Leman. I feel humbled to walk in the footsteps of the editors who have come before me and consider it a privilege to work on Quiltmaker magazine. Now on to this issue. I am an old school letter writer who misses handwriting letters, taking pen to paper to write to friends and family. When Tracy and I were talking about upcoming issues of Quiltmaker for 2021, she said the word “camp” and my brain entered creative overdrive. The word itself has many connotations—from a family home on a lake in Maine, to camping with my Sweetie, something that is “campy,” or letters from mom to a kid at summer camp. That last one stuck. I could see the “lined paper,” words stitched across the page, doodles, and changes in the relationship as the daughter grows and begins to assert her own identity. Inspired by the Past Erica Hill is an avid quilter and stitcher with an interest in the history of needlework and in the recreation of antique quilts and samplers. Starting Over I made my first basic quilt 35 years ago, but it wasn’t until the mid 90’s that I started visiting quilt shops and taking classes. At 50 years old, I realized that in order to be happy, I needed to make my passion my career. I’d actually been training for it my whole life. Along with my lifelong experience designing, creating, and sewing, I’ve had years of education and experience in retailing. Quilting gives me such joy. Growing up in the 4-H program in rural McLean County, Illinois, Laura Loewen was accustomed to competing—with sewn garments, instead of the livestock raised by many of her fellow students. During one state fair contest, Laura sat all day with the only other high school sewing competitor from her county. “We didn’t know anybody else. And she talked about quilting the entire day.
