Few blocks are as versatile as the Log Cabin. Once always made with a red patch in the center to symbolize the hearth of the home, clever quilters discovered they could add interest and even create images simply by varying the sizes of the patches. For this issue, I asked designers to submit their take on this traditional block. Five of those quilts were chosen. The designs range from the traditional, like Christmas Berries by Natalie Crabtree and Yuletide Log Cabin by Brenda Plaster, to the more modern elaborate versions like Bird’s Eye View by Mary Kay Davis and everything in between. Need more ideas for Log Cabin quilts? Consider these prompts and resources: • Move the center The Log Cabin traditionally begins with a square in the center and ends as a square block. Try building the block only on two sides, creating a composition with the original starting point in the corner rather than the middle of the finished block. • Change its shape Who says the block must be square? Start with a rectangle or triangle and add strips of different widths. • Create curves Tutorials abound for this technique online and in books. Think about ways to arrange the curved blocks to make new designs and shapes. • Add in negative space Modern quilts benefit from the ‘air’ that negative space affords the designs. Public Domain. You hear this phrase a lot. We will explore what it means in general, and specifically how to calculate the years to determine when a work is in the public domain. How long does a copyright last? We want to know both as people who create and protect their copyrighted works—i.e. copyright holders, and also as artists making use of others’ works for our own. For instance, Sandra Scheiber Johnson used Robert Delaunay’s “Rythme Sans Fin,” or “Endless Rhythm” painting, adjusting it a bit, to make a stunning quilt. Is this allowed? Dash & Crown “Blocks of many points” are amongst my favorites–I love how many triangles add an element of WOW to a block. I am also on the look-out for ways to make the piecing easier for myself—sometimes eliminating seam lines, or re-directing them to avoid things like set-in seams or odd angles. The traditional Cross & Crown block caught my eye, and by adding an extra square to the end of the sashing piece, a Churn Dash block showed up as a secondary design. If you took a poll of 100 random quilters and asked them what they perceived as the least modern—in other words, the most traditional—quilt block is, you can bet that the ubiquitous Log Cabin would top the list. Why? Because it is a simple, old fashioned block. Or is it? Traditional? Yes. But dull? No! The Log Cabin is essentially one of the most recognizable and versatile blocks in the quilting cannon. An American classic, this design can be traced back to the 1860s and, according to quilt historian Barbara Brackman, the name may be political and likely related to Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 presidential campaign linking the pattern to his rural Kentucky roots.
