Color wheels, complementary colors, tertiary colors, and the like are often topics of quilt design discussion. How do certain fabrics seem to ‘pop’ right off the quilt? It all has to do with color placement and temperature.
Most quilters may be familiar with primary colors (red, blue, yellow), and secondary colors (purple, green, orange), but what does temperature mean when talking about fabric and quilts? Temperature means the warmness or coolness of a color. So, for example, yellow, orange, and red are warm colors, while green, blue, and purple are considered cool. When you know the basics of the color wheel and color temperatures, you can use them to your advantage when choosing fabrics to make a quilt.
