The holiday hubbub is over and I find myself reflecting upon the past year while also dreaming of what 2019 has in store. 2018 held so many huge changes for me including joining The Quilting Company and coming on as Editor of Quiltmaker. I am finally settling in to my new home, my new job, and happy that I got to spend time with my family over the holidays. An Artist Creates Kathryn Wagar Wright grew up in West Milton, Ohio and now lives in Colorado. With a BA and MFA in Studio Art, her design style is influenced by the styles of the Southern Appalachian Mountains and she looks to nature as her source of color inspiration. “I believe all color combinations can be observed in the outdoors, and I don’t rely on more formal color science for the visual appeal of my quilts,” says Kathryn. An American in Germany Growing up, math and art were Karen Akva’s favorite subjects in school, but she decided to get a more practical degree in International Business instead of pursuing her first love of creative arts. Luckily for us, she found the love of quilting when her nephew was born and she decided to make a quilt. “I’ve never completely hand quilted a quilt before. The quilt she decided to make was Sunday-Best Sunbonnet Fancy Sue by Bea Yurkerwich from Quiltmaker March/April 1997. Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Pressing tabs indicate the direction to press the seam allowances. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances. Farm Girl At Heart Mary is an artist from Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Sewing has been a part of her life since she was a child growing up in a small Midwestern farming community. After thirty-five years as an art teacher, Mary retired and started designing paper piece patterns for quilters. Her love for fibers and all things tactile continues to dominate her life, as she now has time to sew and create every day.
