Fall is in the air, birds are flying south for the winter and we are all getting ready for cooler weather. While autumn is usually full of change, fall has brought a big change in my life this year and I am settling into my new role as editor. As a quilter of 27 years, I am thrilled to be part of a magazine with such a rich history and am honored to join the Quiltmaker team. Get ready for Halloween with our cover quilt, Bitty Boo. Art Director Denise Starck designed more Bitty Blocks for this adorable quilt (page 44). Eleven staff members collaborated to create fun projects using these fun blocks. My husband is an avid hunter. In the winter months, he is always pointing out the geese flying overhead. It has made me more aware of the migration of these large birds. So, we watch as they fly south and again when they return north. I decided to make a quilt with “flying geese” looking blocks in reminder of these migrations. When I got through with designing the quilt, I saw another aspect of it. It became a metaphor for living and how we are pulled in all different directions. I looked over the design and rotated the outer corners so they all pointed inside because I wanted to say that’s where we need to look for direction.…

I really like the look of these foundation pieced Flying Geese and the contrast with traditional Flying Geese. With this technique, once you make the various sections, the quilt goes together quickly. I use this technique in many of my quilts: in table runners, in borders, or as the focus of the quilt. When the time came to design one block for Quiltmaker 100 Blocks Vol. 16 it was an easy choice to make a block with two connecting strips of foundation pieced Flying Geese. This quilt is a slight redesign of my original block, using two colors for the geese. Blues and greens are an attractive and soothing color palette. Ever since I saw my first Lone Star quilt in a library book in 1972, I have been drawn to Lone Stars. Shortly thereafter, I made my first of a half-dozen traditional Lone Star and Broken Star quilts. Fast forward to 1987 when I wrote my first book on Lone Stars, Shining Star Quilts. One of the quilts in my Shining Star Quilts book, Unfolding Star, had a block that inspired my pattern for Quiltmaker. It had black diamonds down the long diagonal of the block and rings that were a shade darker on one side of the block than they were on the other side. I don’t think anyone noticed the shading because it was pretty subtle. I always wanted to make another quilt based on that idea, but…

“I enjoy the challenge of learning new things.” — Jill McDaniel Jill McDaniel of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, says that from the moment she saw Monday’s Washday in the May/June 2017 (No. 175) issue, she knew that it would be a perfect quilt for a little girl. Jill decided to use 1930s-style prints in a color palette reminiscent of a sunny day. She modified the design of the original pattern by cutting the dress and flower applique patches with her Silhouette cutting machine for greater speed and accuracy. She says she’s a “newbie” with using the Silhouette, and this was the first time she’d used Steam-A-Seam 2 fusible web, so she was learning two new things at once. On the EQ8 Block Worktable, you can create your own variations by editing an existing block. Add or delete lines to change the block however you like! In this block, a square was added to the center of each geese strip. Then the triangles were rotated to point in opposite directions. In this variation, the geese were deleted from the block. Then the simpler striped block replaced four blocks in the center of the quilt and was used in the setting triangle spaces.…

For someone who has been so strongly associated with traditional scrap quilting for nearly four decades, it’s a little surprising to learn that Judy Martin is a first-generation quilter. The resident of Grinnell, Iowa, says that although her mother was a garment sewer, no one in her family quilted. Science and math were the focus in her home when she was growing up: her father was an engineer, her sister went on to a career as a NASA scientist, and her brother ended up working at Boeing. A doll quilt she made at the age of 9 was her sole exposure to quilting during her childhood. When making bands for Lone Star blocks you will waste less fabric and be more accurate if you follow these simple steps. 1 Arrange your strips in the order to be sewn. 2 Join the first 2 strips offsetting the second strip by approximately the finished width of the strips. In the same manner, continue adding strips until the band is complete. 3 Align the 45-degree mark on the ruler with a seam as shown. 4 Trim the band as shown. 5 Aligning the cut edge of the band with the indicated width, cut the band. 6 Continue cutting until you have the number of units indicated. Excitement grew when our Quilting Company editorial team first saw Denise’s Bitty Boo quilt design. It was almost immediate; everyone joining in to say they wanted to make the quilt. Before we knew it, we had a group project underway. We decided everyone would create their own design spin-off, but it had to include one or more of the bitty block designs Denise used in her quilt. Lori Baker, Quiltmaker’s Acquisitions Editor, reached out to our partner companies for fabrics from their Halloween collections to use for our project. Cut a large square of the main fabric the width of your finished flying geese units plus 1¼”. Cut four small squares of the background fabric the height of your finished flying geese units plus ⅞”. Each set of 1 large square and 4 small squares makes 4 Flying Geese. These units will finish at the correct size with no trimming needed. 1 Draw a diagonal line across each of the background squares. Round robins, row quilts, block exchanges, online bees—quilts made by a group are often more than the sum of their parts. Successful group quilts are fun to make and result in participants who are delighted and amazed by each member’s contributions to the finished products. On the other side of the coin, unsuccessful group quilts can lead to disappointment if guidelines are not clearly agreed to at the beginning and then adhered to by all of the participants. Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Pressing tabs indicate the direction to press the seam allowances. Our patterns list finished block sizes, which are typically ½" smaller than unfinished block sizes because they do not include seam allowances.
