Wow, I can’t quite believe that I am back at the desk writing this issue’s editor’s column. I have had a lovely break enjoying time with the latest addition to our family, Lachlan, as well as spending time with our two older boys, Thomas and Andrew. Megan did a fabulous job holding the reins and I thank her immensely. She’s had wonderful support too from Emma Bradstock and other members of the Universal family. My thanks to all of them. A Matter of Time is a collection of 32 contemporary textile artworks exploring the fourth dimension (time) in cloth, curated by Brenda Gael Smith. Patterns, products, tools and our own skills are changing constantly. I started sewing originally to make clothes; now I do not even do hems! When I found machine-pieced patchwork, a love affair was started that is yet to end. I recently purchased Quilt Workshop for Beginners because I was thinking of maybe having a go at making a quilt. I watched the DVD right through in one hit, and have to say I think it is fantastic. The magazine and the DVD are top class and Michelle Marvig makes it easy for beginners to follow. It has inspired me to give it a go. I am not yet up to making any of the blocks in the magazine, but so far have pieced together a cover using strips from jelly rolls. It’s a start for this complete beginner! The annual Australian Machine Quilting Festival will take place this year at the Adelaide Convention Centre from Thursday 25 August to Sunday 28 August. I designed them on a hexagon grid, each within a same-sized large hexagon. Parts of these appear to be bases of the figures. Janelle Noack lives in the very rural NSW Riverina town of Dirnaseer. In fact the town has a population of just 170! It is farming country and that’s exactly the life Janelle has led. “Growing up on a farm, you learn to make do and use what you have,” Janelle says. “My mum was a great inspiration to me (along with a large extended family with many craft talents), teaching me basic skills that I still rely on and treasure today — cooking, gardening and sewing were, and still are, part of everyday life. When spring is in the air and flowers are blooming all around us, it’s a happy time and we feel good. Although it is still winter, I am looking forward to warmer weather and what wonderful inspiration spring is for your domestic machine quilting — all those beautiful shapes nature provides for us. I would like to share with you some of my go-to designs for sashing and borders for floral quilts. These patterns are all continuous, using the free-motion quilting technique. The flowers are soft, pretty, and are all different. That’s the beauty of domestic machine quilting — it’s the quilter moving the fabric herself. No computers, no following a line, nothing drawn — just all free-form. Therefore each flower is unique; each time you sit at the machine…

Tools Of The Trade Sewing Machine – Any machine can be used for quiltmaking. It is helpful to have a darning foot as an attachment for the machine for free machine quilting. Iron and ironing board – Make these readily available near your sewing machine so that all seams can be pressed to assist in accurate piecing. Needles – Most quilters favour a ‘between’ needle, size 8-12 for both hand-sewing and hand-quilting. Size 12, the smallest size, is usually used by very experienced quilters. Sewing Thread – Use any cotton or cotton-covered polyester thread. For machine quilting, use cotton, cottoncovered polyester, monofilament or decorative threads.
