When designing a quilt, I usually try to start with the themes—in this case, fall, Thanksgiving, and scrappy—and think about what they mean to me. For me, fall is all about rich color, and Thanksgiving is about home—cozy and warm. I also try to think about blocks and motifs that represent the themes with which I’m working. For this quilt, I started with leaves. But as I sketched out my thoughts on graph paper, I migrated toward trees. After putting all of my ideas together—rich color, cozy and warm, and trees—I came up with the fun twist of making pine trees in fall colors, ideally in homespuns or plaids.
