Recently, I finished three quilts in a row that used fabrics by the same designer. That was an unexpected coincidence, and certainly wasn’t done on purpose, but I noticed something as I worked. Every neat little pile of scraps left over from my cuts made me happy—scrap happy! I have no idea when I will use up those bits of fabric bliss, but knowing I have them puts a smile on my face. I decided to try using 10" squares and it took a bit of playing with different sized strips before I found the combination that worked. Jude used up all of the “extras” in a second quilt, Tropical Trellis. The good news is these leftovers don’t have any calories! From the moment I saw the Spooky ‘N Sweeter collection from Art Gallery Fabrics, I just had to make something with it. I immediately imagined an oversized star. Then I found this design by Charisma and serendipity! The perfect quilt pattern for a delicious fabric collection. 1 cup butter 2 cups all-purpose flour ½ tsp. baking soda ¼ tsp. salt ¾ cup packed brown sugar ¼ cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 tsp. vanilla extract Optional decorations: Green sugar crystals and cinnamon candies In 2-quart saucepan, melt butter over medium heat until lightly browned. Refrigerate browned butter until cold but not firm, about 1½ hours. Meanwhile combine flour, baking soda, and salt. You are SEW ACCURATE! Have you ever made all your quilt blocks for a quilt only to realize they aren’t all the same size? If you have, you are not alone. Sewing an accurate seam allowance takes more than just throwing a specialty foot on your machine. It takes practice to become consistent when even slight differences can significantly affect your results in a project with many seams. Beyond that consistent seam, there are other factors that make a difference in your finished block. When patches are opened and pressed, a bit of fabric is “lost” in the seam, which can leave you with sewn units that are slightly too small unless you take this into account when stitching. The block you are making also makes a difference. Let’s consider…

For me, fall is all about rich color, and Thanksgiving is about home—cozy and warm. I also try to think about blocks and motifs that represent the themes with which I’m working. For this quilt, I started with leaves. But as I sketched out my thoughts on graph paper, I migrated toward trees. I’m enamored with the charming packs of pre-cuts that you find in your local quilt shop, so I made the 24" square quilt with 5” charm squares and yardage of background fabric. They are perfect for table toppers or wall quilts. Then I thought, “what if?” What if I use 10" squares rather than 5" squares? I could make a 68" square throw-size quilt. finished size: 63" × 87¼" When I saw this line of fabric, I was reminded of my parents with our kids. They truly embraced being grandparents to their seven grandchildren. One of the many traditions they created was that they would invite the grandkids come a day early for Christmas so they could stay at Grandma and Grandpa’s house. My dad and usually my brother would bundle all seven kids up in snow gear and take them to a local sledding hill where they would go sledding with them all afternoon.
