This time of year brings back memories of getting my boys ready to go back to school. One thing I always did with each of them before school started, from the time they were in preschool to their senior year in high school, was to take each of them individually for a day out. We went shopping for school supplies and clothes, had lunch at the restaurant of their choice and then went to a movie (or other fun activity). It was our special time together, and we still talk about our days out! Getting Started About our Patterns We recommend that you read all of the instructions before starting a project and that you cut and sew one block before cutting all of your fabric. Using a rotary cutter, mat and an acrylic ruler, cut the shape to the size indicated in the cutting list. Not only did Connie use the blue wave batik as her focus fabric in this quilt, she also used the undulating design as a guide for quilting in the C patches. She outlined the pattern on the fabric with stitching, giving the fabric, and the quilt by extension, dimension and interest. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with quilting a crib quilt with a simple allover meander or straight-line grid, Donna’s quilting on Whale of a Tale is a wonderful lesson on how easy quilting motifs can bring out new shapes in a quilt design. By quilting in the ditch diagonally through the unit 1’s and unit 2’s on both sides of the red print squares, she defined a faux border and created the illusion of an on-point medallion in the center of the quilt, with the Large Nine-Patch Block as the focus. My original inspiration was a very scrappy 12" block from an antique quilt. I increased the size of the block significantly to make one quadrant of my quilt. From a construction perspective, I worked in quarters completely, from layout on the design wall to finishing each quarter before I started the next. I colored my initial design drawing so I could start somewhere with the specific fabric placement ( NOTE: we’ve included a coloring diagram so others may do the same if they wish). The other specific construction technique I used was to pin all the triangle points before sewing, making sure that the pin lined up exactly on both sides of the seam. Then, when joining blocks, I alternated the pressing direction of each row. Once all four sections…

The strength of Picket Corner’s design makes it a great pattern for using blenders, textures and other solid or almost-solid fabrics in the striped portions created around the A’s. This means you can easily customize the color palette to suit any taste thanks to the wide range of basics offered by different fabric companies. Choose a main hue, then select light, medium and dark fabrics to create the plaid effect. Brenda designed a largely monochromatic purple palette for her original version, but you can also use an analogous or complementary shade in the units 1, 2 and 3 for an extra pop of color. This version was made with textures from Quilting Treasures’ line of basics, including the Harmony Squares, Matrix, Color Blends and Ombre Dots collections.…

String-pieced fabric uses lots of scraps and is so much fun to make. Choose your fabrics so you have a good mix of print sizes, a wide range of values from light to dark and lots of different shades of color. For example, in the blue string-pieced fabric, teal, deep navy, a gray/ denim blue and sky blue work together well. The more shades and values, the more interesting your string-pieced fabric will be. Don’t worry about the style of the fabric. Lori uses 1930s reproduction fabrics, big and bright Kaffe Fassett prints and everything in between. Cut fabric strips in varying widths from 1" to 2½". Use copy paper, old phone books or something similar as a foundation. Start with a foundation about 1" larger than the patch measurements.…
