The iconic outline is simple, but it’s all the little gaps and spaces in between that pose a challenge for anyone wishing to make a selection. The bare tree branches on the right make things even harder. So how can you cut out an object like this? Forget using the freehand or simple selection tools: it would probably take a week. Start with the Spot Healing Brush then, if this goes wrong, switch to the Healing Brush, which gives you a greater degree of control as you’re able to Alt-click to define a nearby source area. If both the healing tools go wrong, it’s time to switch to the Clone Tool. Again, Alt-click to target a source area, then paint to clone over unwanted details. True infrared must be captured incamera, using either a dense IR filter or an IR-converted spare camera. But the characteristic glowing foliage and fine grain are fairly easy to replicate in Photoshop with a combination of tonal tools and simple filter effects. There are several ways to convert to black and white in Photoshop, and there are no right or wrong ways. But our favorite is the black and white toolset in Camera Raw (or in Lightroom’s Develop Module). After opening an image into Camera Raw (or, if in Photoshop, using Filter > Camera Raw Filter) the first thing to do is choose a monochrome profile. If it’s a raw image, you can use the dedicated Adobe Raw profile; if it’s a JPEG, experiment with the B&W Profile set. Once that’s done, go to the HSL Panel to find the Black & White Mix options, where you can fine-tune the conversion by tweaking the brightness of eight different color ranges. Learning how they should be used may seem a little daunting for beginners, but once you’ve got to grips with them, you’ll find they play a part in the creative process of almost every image you make. 01 LEVELS This should be the first layer you add to an image, because it fundamentally alters the tonal range of the entire image.
