⏩ Photoshop has many types of layers and adjustment layers available, but there are six that you’ll find you need to use again and again. Learning how they should be used may seem a little daunting for beginners, but once you’ve got to grips with them, you’ll find they play a part in the creative process of almost every image you make. 01 LEVELS This should be the first layer you add to an image, because it fundamentally alters the tonal range of the entire image. ⏩ The Swatches panel is a place to store your favorite colors. The color boxes are quite small, but you can click the flyout menu in the top right of the panel and choose Large Thumbnail to make them bigger. ⏩ There are four Blending Modes that are useful for controlling color. One of the problems when you make a tonal change is that it can have an adverse effect on colors. For example, a contrast boost via an S-curve applied to an Adjustment Layer will not only increase contrast, but also color saturation. Use the Luminosity Blending Mode to eliminate the color change. Similarly, enhancing Saturation with a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer may also brighten an image: the more saturated a color is, the lighter it becomes. This can be countered by changing the Blending Mode of the Adjustment Layer to Saturation. The same applies to hue changes: by setting the Blending Mode to Hue or Color, the change in brightness is negated.…

It’s similar to using the Eraser Tool, in that you can remove details and poke holes in an image. But with Layer Masks, the pixels are never completely erased, only hidden. You have the freedom to reveal them again at any time. Hiding a portion of one layer will allow the same area on the layer below to show through, just as if you took a pair of scissors to a paper collage. Once enabled, you can summon a color wheel picker, which is often more intuitive than using the standard color picker.
