Photoshop Blend Modes let you create all kinds of wonderful effects, especially when used in combination with images of textures and surfaces. You simply drop the texture on top of an image, so that it sits on a separate layer above, then you experiment with different layer Blend Modes until you hit upon one that you like. Here are a few of our favorites: Lighten, Screen, Darken, Multiply, Overlay, and Soft Light.
