A typical Lightroom CC workflow might work as follows… You begin by choosing a set of photos in the ‘My Photos’ tab on the left, or import new photos with the plus icon, then switch to the right side to edit the photos. This right side houses all the tools and sliders Lightroom users will be familiar with. They’re organized differently – categorized as Light, Color, Details, Effects, Optics and Geometry. 01 COPY AND BLEND Open the double_ exposure01 and 02 start files. Grab the Move tool and drag the 02 image up to the tab of the other image and then down inside the image window to copy the layer over, then go to the Layers panel (Window > Layers). Click the Blend mode dropdown at the top and change it from Normal to Screen. 02 FINE-TUNE POSITIONING Double-click the lower layer to make it editable. Use the Move tool to alter the positions until both layers are aligned in the way you want. Press Ctrl/Cmd+T if you need to resize or rotate, and use the Crop tool to remove messy edges. 01 USE A WIRELESS RELEASE You need your camera to stay in a fixed position throughout while you move the mirror, so a tripod is essential. A wireless release lets you fire the shutter from a distance, so you can quickly fire and move. Our Nikon D800 is in Aperture Priority mode at f/11, ISO 100. 02 MOVE THE MIRROR Start with the mirror in the bottom-left corner of your scene, then move it along the bottom of the frame, occasionally checking the viewfinder to gauge the position. Photoshop has many types of layers and adjustment layers available, but there are six that you’ll find you need to use again and again. Learning how they should be used may seem a little daunting for beginners, but once you’ve got to grips with them, you’ll find they play a part in the creative process of almost every image you make. 01 LEVELS This should be the first layer you add to an image, because it fundamentally alters the tonal range of the entire image. Create a Levels Adjustment Layer, drag the Black Point slider inwards until it touches the lefthand edge of the histogram, and drag the White Point slider inwards to the right-hand edge. LEARN PANEL A new Learn panel is designed to help beginners find their way around Photoshop. It takes you through a range of simple photo edits, from changing the warmth of an image to creating a composite. As you work through the steps, blue panels hover over the interface, guiding you where to click and what to do. It’s a useful tool for those new to Photoshop, or any users who are in need of a refresher. Another new feature for beginners are rich tool tips. The Blend Mode list is divided into six categories. The first section contains Normal and Dissolve [1]. The next holds the Darken blend modes [2]: each has the effect of darkening an image. Below this is the Lighten set [3], which – you’ve guessed it – all have a lightening effect. Next is the Overlay set [4]: these lighten and darken at the same time, creating contrast in different ways. Below this is the Difference set [5] – five modes that have an inverting effect on pixels. 1 MIRROR A circular mirror is the foundation of this technique. You simply photograph it in various positions throughout the frame, then combine all the shots later. 2 SUBJECT We dug a little hole, filled our container with water and placed our subject, then took several frames while shifting the mirror around in front of him. 3 TRIPOD We ended up with nearly 150 photos for our composite here – each one taken in perfect alignment, thanks to our trusty, sturdy Benro tripod. 4 SKIES The lighting needs to stay consistent throughout.
