01 DODGE AND BURN WITH OVERLAY One of the best ways to lighten and darken non-destructively is by painting on a grey layer. Alt-click the New Layer icon in the Layers Panel. Set its Blend Mode to Overlay and tick the Fill With box to make a grey layer, then grab the Brush Tool and paint with white or black at around 10% opacity to dodge and burn selected areas of your photo. 02 GET THE HAND-PAINTED LOOK If you want to give some of your black-and-white images a handpainted look, try making a new layer and setting its Blend Mode to Color. Now grab the Brush Tool, choose a color and start painting. For best results, use a low opacity for the brush and build up the colors gradually.…

Rather than basing the selection area on colors, shapes or tones like the Quick Selection Brush or Magic Wand, it instead computes a selection based on what is sharp and what is soft. As such, it’s very useful for quickly isolating a subject and dropping in a new background – as long, of course, as the original background is out of focus. DISSOLVE Creates a pixelated blend, the effects of which only become apparent when you begin to lower layer opacity (50% here). DARKEN Lighter pixels on the top layer are replaced by the colors and tones from the layer below, while darker pixels remain unchanged. MULTIPLY Multiplies colors in the layer with those below. Colors on the top layer that are lighter are replaced with those on the lower layer. COLOR BURN Increases the contrast between each layer. Light pixels on the top layer don’t affect the colors and tones on the layer below. LINEAR BURN Lowers the brightness of layers below to reflect the colors of the top layer. Photoshop has many types of layers and adjustment layers available, but there are six that you’ll find you need to use again and again. Learning how they should be used may seem a little daunting for beginners, but once you’ve got to grips with them, you’ll find they play a part in the creative process of almost every image you make. 01 LEVELS This should be the first layer you add to an image, because it fundamentally alters the tonal range of the entire image.
