One of my favourite parts of editing this magazine is being able to read all about your fantastic caravans – we test some of the hottest tourers around, but it’s always great to see the caravans of readers. That’s why I’ve really been enjoying former editor Nigel Donnelly’s updates on his £1000, 1998 project caravan, Penny, as he tackles all of the ups and downs that come with owning an older model. Q WHERE IN SPAIN IS GREAT TO TOUR? We hear good things about touring in northern Spain, and we’re tempted. Do you have any recommendations on where to go? We’ve never been to Spain. When to go We went in August and spent most of our time outside, just enjoying the weather. But there are lots of indoor attractions in Newbury, so a trip to this area could work at any time of year. Way to go We took the A34 from Oxford to Newbury. After we’d bypassed Newbury on the A34, we took a left turn onto the A343 Andover Road and continued to follow it at the roundabout. We took the right turn soon after the roundabout to Penwood Road, leading to the campsite. When to go We toured in June, which meant the sea was actually warm enough for a swim! Getting there The closest French Channel port to the area is St Malo, about a 4.5-hour drive away. I sailed from Portsmouth on the Brittany Ferries vessel MV Bretagne, first launched in 1989, but extensively renovated to the tune of £5m in 2009. On board you will find an à la carte and a self-service restaurant, a piano bar, a cinema, several boutiques selling clothes and books as well as duty-free goods, and even a nail bar. Caravan industry puts on a great show I paid my first visit to the Great Caravan, Motorhome & Holiday Home Show last month – the new Harrogate version of what used to be The Lawns Show in Hull. By all accounts, it was an improvement on the inaugural event last year (which I missed), with plenty of highlights (see p60). In any case, it was great to see so many exciting new models in the Yorkshire sunshine – yes, really! I came away with the distinct feeling that four years after lockdown, there is a real buzz in the air. I hope it continues, even with less certain news from Swift this month (see right). Luxury brands can be superb bargains I’ve been meeting plenty of folk on the forecourts and at recent shows who were looking at pre-owned tourers. For many, a sound used buy is the ideal way to get into caravanning on a budget. Several people I spoke to were browsing the luxury used models, such as Coachman, noting how most upmarket pre-owned vans seem to be very well looked after – we can vouch for that, too. Prices are still quite firm, but keep looking – that doesn’t mean you won’t bag yourself a bargain! Kia Sportage (2016-21) The Sportage put Kia on the map. It looks good, is very well equipped, and makes a great tow car. Stability is the watchword when towing, and even if the weather is on the lively side, the Sportage remains unflustered. The interior feels well put together and is reasonably stylish. And the Sportage has plenty of space for five people. Nissan X-Trail (2014-22) The X-Trail might not have the go-anywhere ability of the Subaru Forester, but it does have one trick up its sleeve: it can carry seven people. Admittedly, the two rearmost passengers need to be small children, but it’s a boon. It’s also very well equipped and reasonably cheap to run. C'est magnifique! Okay, so French lunch service can be a bit of a tight window – 12 until 2pm and then it’s “Nous sommes fermés.” And yes, it can rain a lot in the north – you only have to have watched the Paris Olympics to see that! But apart from those minor points, there’s little for visitors to complain about in this beautiful country across the Channel. Leisure batteries provide 12V power in caravans, so you can use low-voltage devices and appliances when you don’t have 240V hook-up power. Typically, this includes your lighting, 12V TV and water pumps, while appliances that require more current, such as motor movers, heating systems and hot water boilers, will flatten your leisure battery in a relatively short time. Certain devices, such as hairdryers and kettles, are available in 12V formats for touring, but aren’t as powerful as domestic equivalents. A leisure battery can be charged when your caravan is on the road and when it’s plugged into a hook-up post. You can also charge it with a trickle charger when it’s on your driveway or in storage. THE HIGHWAY CODE was updated in 2022 with a strong emphasis on protecting people on two wheels, on foot, or riding horses. The guiding principle of these changes is the ‘hierarchy of road users’ – those who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility. Sometimes this is misrepresented as implying that vulnerable road users can do as they please, which isn’t the intention of the changes. HOW TO BUY NEW Choosing a layout People’s needs differ, and your van layout choice will depend on your companions and how you want to use your caravan. To understand which layouts are available, spend a day at one of the big shows in Birmingham or Glasgow, where dealerships and manufacturers show their latest models. A dealership is also a good place to start, but can be affiliated with a limited number of manufacturers. A chat with a dealer, though, could raise issues or offer ideas that you had not considered. GETAWAY TRAVEL THE ILE DE RÉ, lying halfway down the west coast of France, has in recent years become something of a prime destination for caravanners in the know, because it has fine beaches, with proper waves and miles of fabulous sand, not to mention a handful of pretty seaside resorts. The island does have one snag, however, and that is the cost of getting there. At the time of writing, the toll to cross the bridge with a caravan was at least €16 between June and September (realistically, the only months when the sea is likely to be warm enough for an enjoyable swim), although you can get a seasonal pass if you are stay for a long time. Choosing the right toilet chemical can make the task of emptying the toilet cassette a much less daunting prospect, helping to maintain your facilities and keep them fresh. This is because the best chemicals will make it easier to dispose of waste, breaking it down and liquefying it, as well as combatting odours. Even if you are staying at a full-facility touring park, it’s likely you will want to use your own washroom at some point, which is why keeping things fresh is so important. Compared with the typical habits of car buyers, we’re far more likely to stay true to one company. But should we be more willing to choose different brands, rather than staying with one we know? HAVE YOU EVER visited one of the national leisure vehicle shows and been wowed by the huge array of LED lights now available on the market? I often find myself – just like a moth – drawn to them (1)!
