South Lea’s 60 pitches all have electric hook-up and the site is often filled to capacity but retains a family-friendly atmosphere. The trees are dotted with bird boxes and owls are regular visitors. There is a large grass area away from the pitches for ball games, and a play park. The appeal for my parents is that the site is flat, as is most of the surrounding area. The bus stop is outside the site, making York, Beverly and Hull within easy reach. The coast is a bit further and is much easier to reach by car. A HEAVYWEIGHT 4X4 in the BMW X5/Toyota Land Cruiser class and a whole lot cheaper than either, the original Sorento was praised for its towing ability and value when we reviewed it five years ago. So much was expected of the Sorento II, especially because Kia made a lot of noise about its ethos of constant improvement, and its offer of a seven-year/100,000-mile transferable warranty. OMNIVENTS — SOME PEOPLE love them, others don’t. Personally, I quite like them, but I’ve found a secondary use for them and have, over the years, relied on them to bring cool air into the van rather than as an extractor fan; in hot weather, it’s especially effective when paired with a portable desk fan. Yes, they can be noisy, especially early versions, like the late 1990s model in this example. They were made of solid plastic and blocked out daylight. Newer ones are made of clear plastic and, as a result, are far better. They also have mesh upper screens rather than solid-plastic slats as before. Layout Layout finder finder J This is a compact layout that you’ll usually find in the shortest vans on the market; the double bed is made up from the pair of sofas at the front. You’ll sometimes find that the sofas aren’t long enough to be used as single beds, so be sure to check this if it’s important to you. Focus on… Eriba Eriba may now be under Hymer’s giant corporate umbrella, having been manufactured in France for years, but very little else has changed in more than 50 years. Styling tweaks aside, the instantly recognisable bullet shape is much as it was back in the day, the pop-top roof still affords good headroom yet allows for straightforward storage, and, of course, the famous tubular steel frame gives these little tourers legendary build quality and impeccable towing manners. We spent the whole week based at Black Horse Farm Caravan Club site in Densole, near Folkestone. It’s open all year and is fairly compact for a club site, but feels all the more intimate and welcoming as a result. Eighty-four of the 118 pitches are hardstanding and some are fully serviced – ours was enormous, with room for a car, a caravan and awning and plenty of space left over. Special ‘ferry’ pitches are available for caravanners overnighting to catch an early morning ferry (25 minutes away) or Eurotunnel train (10 minutes) across the Channel to France, too. Northern powerhouse kicks off show season A NEW EVENT has joined the roster of regional shows: Camperex 2016, held in Liverpool in January. It majored on tents and accessories, but was also the backdrop for the launch of niche tourers: Barefoot (‘First look’, February), R-pod, Teardrop and Driftwood. Now a 4x4 version broadens the crossover’s appeal to caravanners. The Tivoli uses torque-on-demand, so power goes to the front wheels until the tyres struggle for grip, when power is sent to the rear. For towing from a muddy pitch, the car can be locked in four-wheel-drive mode. As well as better traction, the extra weight of the 4x4 transmission makes the Tivoli a suitable match for a wider range of vans. How much? £7500-£20,000 I did actually see a Sorento II advertised privately for £3950, but it was a KX-1 manual with nearly 200,000 on the clock; £7500, as shown above, is more realistic. KX-2s with some breathing space before they hit the all-important 100k mark start at around £10,000 for a 2010 model (that’s £15,000 in depreciation in six years) and move up from there. You can pay a little less for a KX-1, and at least £1250 more for a KX-3. WAY TO GO Densole is easily reached even with the biggest caravan in tow, located as it is just off the A260, which links the main A2 Dover road to the north and the M20 to the south. As lapsed caravan owners from the 1990s, and as a retired couple now, my wife and I plan to return to the nomadic life afforded by caravanning. We currently have our eyes on purchasing a VW Passat Alltrack 190PS and coupling this with an Eriba Troll 550 fixed-bed model with bells and whistles, including a motor mover. My query is: would this outfit be a safe match? Richard Pell Motty replies… Although a large caravan by Eriba’s standards, the Troll 550 is still a relatively light tourer. The current model has a Mass in Running Order (MiRO) of 1000kg and a Maximum Technically Permissible Laden Mass (MTPLM) of 1300kg. Sorento KX-2 2.2 CRDi My last Kia was a 2.5 Sorento — a better tug than the KX-2, but fuel consumption with the new car is much better. I can average 27.5mpg towing and 49mpg solo. The KX-2 is also a more comfortable drive with a nicer interior. The amidships kitchen is short on work surface, but the side dinette provides extra space.
