Rape cases rise in 3 years
POST REPORTER WHILE the rape statistics over a 10-year period show numbers are falling, there has been an increase in the past three years.
In the last reporting period, 8 017 rapes were reported, up by 5% compared with the previous reporting period.
From a national perspective, two KwaZulu-Natal police stations recorded the highest number – Inanda (297 cases) and uMlazi (293).
Plessislaer (Pietermaritzburg), Empangeni and Osizweni are other KZN police stations that made the Top 30 list.
According to the statistics for KZN, most rapes happened at private homes, either of the perpetrator, the victim or homes owned by family or friends of the perpetrator or victim.
