During my years working in the tiling industry, I have visited suburbs all over Sydney to offer design advice for pool renovations. Time and time again, I have visited pools with designs that were popular in the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s, which have failed. Some of the projects I visited left vivid memories of the early stages of the evolving pool tiling industry. When I think of these old pools, I get a mental image of a light-green water colour resulting from a deteriorating lining that covered the interior of the pool and also flowed over the raised coping. This coastal site in the Victorian town of Portsea slopes quite rapidly, and the homeowners, who were undertaking a home renovation, wanted their pool to be directly accessible from the deck. As a result, their north-facing fully tiled pool is suspended within a timber deck, which is situated up to 2.4m from the ground.
