Heroes In The Pattern
I am an 83-year-old retired Air Traffic Controller. I was 10 years old when World War II started and 14 when the war ended. I listened on the radio when President Roosevelt asked Congress to declare war on Japan after the Pearl Harbor attack, and later in the war when he announced the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo, and many other “fireside chats” from that fantastic voice. Of course, the whole country was rationing everything you could think of, and guys were enlisting in the armed forces as quick as they could. So many of the guys at Pearl and the flight crews were barely out of high school.
