Thank you to Budd Davisson for writing “The White Coat Syndrome” [September 2014] and discussing this torturous journey every two years for pilots with hypertension arriving at their doctor’s office for a Third Class Medical examination. I know this all too well as I have been a victim of this difficult and stressful problem for many years in the past. A recent Duke University study found that 20 million Americans with a doctor’s diagnosis of hypertension (elevated blood pressure) don’t have high blood pressure at all. The study showed that 25% of all patients who have their blood pressure measured in the doctor’s offices and hospitals are so unnerved by the medical environment that their numbers temporarily rise an extra 15 points or higher.
