GoTow Drill-Powered Tow Bar The GoTow tow bar provides a helpful source of assistance when an airplane needs to be moved from a hangar or other location. The product relies on a drill of 18V or higher to power movement, and it features a standing platform for operators that can accommodate individuals of up to 270 pounds. While stationed upon the platform, users provide the weight needed for the wheel to move, and the steerable wheel allows them to manipulate the direction of movement as needed. With a drill set on low power, the tow bar moves an aircraft 12 feet per minute, while a drill set on high power will allow the tow bar to cover 42 feet per minute. As of December 31, 2018, there were an estimated 32,831 active helicopter pilots in the U.S. The Robinson Helicopter Company has graduated almost that many pilots since the mid ’80s from its four-day Robinson Pilot Safety Course. So, after passing my commercial helicopter add-on check ride—and propelled by a robust suggestion from my alma mater, Hillsboro Aero Academy—I signed up. Robinson offers 13 classes a year at the factory in Torrance, California, and several more internationally through its overseas dealer network. The ancient and honorable art of slipping an aircraft to achieve a desired flight path is an excellent tool to keep in one’s kit-bag of aviation tricks. Once employed regularly to adjust a landing approach, slipping has become an infrequently used maneuver, chiefly because modern airplanes have been fitted with effective wing flaps that can be used to add drag during landing. The side-slip remains necessary for cross-wind correction, and a forward slip to landing has been preserved for the Private Pilot practical exam.
