When Christian Nielsen was just 4, his parents divorced, leaving him and his younger sister victims of a long, bitter custody battle.
It was not helped by the fact that their mum began a relationship with a 25-year-old career criminal.
The man, who’d been in trouble with the police, serving time for burglary and theft, was hardly a role model for young children.
In fact, both children soon began displaying worrying behaviour, including uncontrolled urinating, excessive aggression and nervousness.
Two years later, in 1981, when Christian was 6, his dad was in a stable relationship with his second wife and, luckily for the children, was granted full custody.
