My daughter, Lexie, 6, has an incredible spirit. She was born severely deaf in both ears. In January 2009, doctors told us hearing aids may help, but she’d never hear fully.
At first, my hubby, Andrew, 34, and I felt lost, but with support from the National Deaf Children’s Society, meeting other deaf kids attending mainstream schools, we realised she’d be fine.
Lexie’s big sisters, Kiah, 16, and Tayler-Leigh, 8, looked out for her, and learned sign language.
At 2, Lexie had an op to fit two grommets, widening the tubes in each ear, so she could hear sounds.
Surrounded by her family, Lexie’s speech developed, improving tenfold when her baby brother, EJ, arrived, in 2011.
‘Hey, little bro!’ Lexie cooed.
Despite lots of painful ear infections, Lexie never grumbled.…
