The UK’s Royal Observatory has announced the shortlist for this year’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest – the world’s largest Astrophotography competition – and it’s a suitably star-studded showcase of spectacular night-sky images.
This year’s contest received more than 3,500 entries from amateur and professional photographers in 58 countries. There are nine main categories, including Skyscapes, Aurorae, People and Space, Stars and Nebulae, Galaxies, and Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year, as well as two special awards.
The winners will be announced at an online ceremony on September 12, and the winning images will be displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London from September 14. Click the link to see more shortlisted images at the competition website, and read the stories behind them.
