STARTING SETTINGS Anthony eased David into the shoot by letting him take some photos with the available natural light and Anthony’s LED panel to keep the lighting simple. They stayed in Aperture priority (Av) mode for this, although later switched to Manual when working with the ring flash. Av mode allows David to fine-tune his aperture to control how deep or shallow he wants the depth of field to be for his close-up shots, with the camera then working out the correct shutter speed. HISTOGRAM TIPS Anthony showed David how to use the histogram on his Canon EOS 80D. 1 DEDICATED MACRO LENS A ‘true’ macro lens has a reproduction of at least 1:1. This is also called ‘life size’ because it means your subject, such as a small butterfly, will be captured at the same size as if it was laid across the camera sensor. Anthony uses a Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP Di USD VC Macro lens with a 1:1 reproduction ratio. Lenses like Canon’s RF 100mm F2.8L Macro IS USM and the Canon MP-E 65mm f/2.8 go even closer, at 1:1.4 and 1:5 respectively. 2 EXTENSION TUBES Moving the lens further away from the focal plane of your camera (the sensor) allows the lens to focus at greater magnifications, and you can do this by adding extension tubes between your camera and lens. The UK’s Royal Observatory has announced the shortlist for this year’s Astronomy Photographer of the Year contest – the world’s largest Astrophotography competition – and it’s a suitably star-studded showcase of spectacular night-sky images. This year’s contest received more than 3,500 entries from amateur and professional photographers in 58 countries. There are nine main categories, including Skyscapes, Aurorae, People and Space, Stars and Nebulae, Galaxies, and Young Astronomy Photographer of the Year, as well as two special awards. The winners will be announced at an online ceremony on September 12, and the winning images will be displayed at the National Maritime Museum in London from September 14. www.panasonic.com £619/$750 (kit with 12-32mm F3.5-5.6 lens) The original Panasonic Lumix G100 was launched in 2020 as an entry point to the Lumix mirrorless camera range, and with an emphasis on vlogging features, notably a vari-angle screen and an advanced mic array for recording in different situations. The Lumix G100D is a newer variant that’s more of a maintenance release than a new camera. The fundamental features and design haven’t changed, and there are just two differences: the EVF has dropped in resolution from 3.68 million dots to 2.36 million, but has swapped from TFT technology to OLED – so the screen is better. Insta360 has announced its new ‘Flow Pro’ AI tracking stabiliser – the first gimbal that makes use of Apple DockKit for iPhone. This feature allows the gimbal to take advantage of Apple’s subject-tracking AI to help cancel out shakes and wobbles for smooth shots using the iPhone’s native camera app. It also means you can use around 200 third-party iOS apps that follow Apple’s developer guidelines and still take advantage of the device, plus you get the convenience of one-tap pairing and automatic reconnection. The new gimbal is also compatible with Android phones, although Android users won’t have access to the same range of features as iPhone users. The 3-axis gimbal is capable of full 360-degree rotation, and is powered by Insta360’s Deep Track 3.0 algorithm. It has four main…

IN-CAMERA CLEANING Most cameras have a cleaning setting which vibrates the sensor on startup and shutdown to shake any loose dust particles onto a ‘sticky’ pad at the bottom of the sensor chamber, which should be replaced when your camera is serviced properly. AIR POWER Anthony carefully cleans the DSLR mirror box chamber with his filtered air blower (never canned air) and puts the camera into its cleaning mode to lock the mirror up for cleaning. He then holds the camera facing downwards while pumping air inside to knock off any dust. SENSOR CLEANING A series of shots are ‘dry-fired’ to encourage any dust on the shutter and mirror to come loose.
