Ben Cole was born in South Korea and grew up in Sydney, where he first distinguished himself in photography at high school. Before the days of autofocusing, many photographers missed shots because they didn’t identify (or were too slow to adjust the lens focus on) the optimal area of the subject. Those days are long gone but, even now, many photographers worry about why some of their images weren’t quite sharp. They’re also concerned because they find their camera’s focus menus too complex and confusing to understand. Nailing autofocusing can be challenging and coming to grips with your camera’s focus system will take time – and some trial and effort. Most members of the public view their photos and videos on screens, commonly either their handheld devices or TV screens but also on their computer monitors when files are uploaded. But that’s not the complete picture for photo enthusiasts, who take advantage of a wider range of output options. Our last reader survey revealed 85% of Photo Review readers print their own photos and 68% of them plan to make prints larger than 5 x 7-inch size this year. ‘When I moved from northern New South Wales to Melbourne to study graphic design,’ said architectural photographer Damien Kook, ‘I couldn’t take my double bass with me. Why visit? An annual highlight in the harbour city, Vivid Sydney is a leading family-focused winter event. Owned, managed and produced by the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, it has grown from its humble beginnings in 2009 to become a major attraction that drew more than 1.2 million attendees in the first week of the 2025 event and more than three million visitors over its 23-day run. In June this year, Glen O’Malley reached a remarkable anniversary: 50 years as an exhibiting photographer. He has exhibited in every one of those years in a continuum comprising more than 40 solo shows and 200 others in Australia and internationally, as well as inclusion in many of Australia’s major art gallery photographic collections. ‘I always knew I wanted to make images to show on walls,’ says O’Malley with the wry simplicity of someone who has thought a lot about what he does.
