LATE LAST APRIL, the 1,760 seats of The Theatre at Solaire were filled with Manila’s VIPs, who, at Solaire Resort and Casino’s invitation, were in for quite a night. Burgundy sales at Berry Bros & Rudd, a major UK wine retailer that has been selling wines in Hong Kong since 1997, are up more than 100 per cent this year compared to three years ago, says the company’s Burgundy director, Jasper Morris. WHEN THE BEATLES visited the Philippines in 1966, their experience was anything but pleasant. After politely declining the invitation to one of Imelda Marcos’ parties, the Fab Four soon found out that they had offended the Marcoses, who were not accustomed to accepting “no” for an answer. Word spread fast, and the day after the concert, The Manila Hotel—where the group was staying—was swarmed with demonstrators who attacked the band and their entourage, hounding them all the way to the airport.
