When I was in the process of writing my new book, I hit a creative block when it came to the title. I’d spent a decade interviewing incredible people about their coping mechanisms for surviving the worst experiences of their lives while still hoping for the best. Why did you decide to become a florist? I always loved flowers but was first moved to work with them after experiencing the loss of a dear family friend. Neighbours from our rural community delivered buckets of homegrown flowers to my family’s farm, and I arranged fragrant posies of muscari, jonquils and daffodils for our friends so they would have something sweet-smelling in their home to help them through the hard time. How did you get into sewing? I’ve always loved playing with fashion and colour and texture! I wanted to make my own clothing but had tried a handful of times in my teens and the result was just so underwhelming I gave up. It was only after becoming a mum that I got into it. When New Zealander Michael Allpress visited Seattle as a 29-year-old in the late 1980s, he was drawn to the city’s strong coffee culture – and when a mobile espresso cart caught his eye in the street one day, he had an idea. When I was younger I once made a hand-stitched brooch from just scraps of fabric and a jolt of inspiration. I remember the joy of sitting and stitching, of creating something out of nothing, and then showing it to my parents. While sewing wasn’t new for me growing up in a very creative family, this particular moment has stayed strongly in my memory because I created something that might have been from pure inspiration.
