For some, it’s a mere addition to a favorite cocktail; for others, it’s a stand-alone drink with character and charm. When vermouth was invented towards the end of the seventeenth century, it was an immediate sensation. The creation is generally credited to Antonio Benedetto Carpano, who enhanced the coarse wine of the period with a blend of 30 herbs and spices. The sweetness of Carpano’s potion appealed to many segments of the population (particularly to the ladies) and became a favorite of the Turin royal court. Fifty years ago, Dodie Thayer began experimenting with a pottery mold she created using lettuce and cabbage leaves. The novice South Florida artisan deemed her ceramic dining essentials lettuce ware and sold the handmade works at a Palm Beach boutique. Soon enough, Thayer’s nature-green creations became entertaining must-haves for every table in town and beyond: Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Duchess of Windsor and C.Z.  THE MARGARITA Cinco de Mayo technically commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, but for most of us the day is an excellent excuse to party—and nothing symbolizes Mexico better than a margarita. Three things are crucial when making a margarita: fresh lime juice, Cointreau (rather than triple sec) and the best tequila you can find. The standard ratio is 7:4:3—50 percent tequila, 29 percent Cointreau and 21 percent lime juice. Margarita 1 B/c ounces tequila B/c ounce Cointreau 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice Rub the rim of the glass with lime juice, and coat with salt. Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake briskly and strain over ice into the glass, taking care not to dissolve the salt. Garnish with a slice of lime.…

It’s a common problem: A local wine lover buys a covetable bottle at auction but has no appropriate place to store it. Auction houses and wine experts recommend specific cool temperatures and humidity levels, but South Florida’s warm climate isn’t a naturally conducive environment. The 34-year-old entrepreneur has founded Vineyard Vault by Elite Stor, a 20,000-square-foot climate- and humidity-controlled storage facility in West Palm Beach with wine wall units available for rent.
