Damon Smith, born in Perth, based in Melbourne but with his heart in New Orleans, has found time between film projects to present his new album, Skeletons. Ensconced on his piano stool, Smith’s music is like a blend of Dr John and Randy Newman on these 11 tracks, with a little help from saxophonist Wilbur Wilde, jazz pianist Barney McAll, the horns of Melbourne’s Sugarfoot Ramblers and a whole lot more local musicians. ‘Midlife Clarity Blues’ is a short, whimsical blues-flavoured track, there’s nice guitar work on the comical ‘You’ve Got To Move On (Skeletons)’ and Smith ramps up the piano, boogie style, on ‘Midlife Crisis Blues’. There is a melancholy air to ‘Led Me To A Goldmine’, and there’s more “crying in your beer”…
