Making creative photographs requires the pushing of boundaries beyond the norms and trends of the day. Over the decades I’ve made landscape photographs, I’ve found that pursuing new tangents in technique or subject matter has kept me creatively invigorated and moving forward. My latest passion is experimenting with an alternate, high-key approach to post-processing. The typical way most of us process our photographs is to show a full range of tones, from luminous shadows with detail in them to bright highlights. High-key images show only tonal values on the upper end of a histogram, with the darkest tones being around middle gray and the lighter tones being light gray to near white tones. IN APRIL 2017, I set off in my small RV, a 1999 Roadtrek 190 Popular, on an epic road trip from Maine to Alaska. I had dreamed about going full time on the road for quite a while, and in the summer of 2016 I finally set things in motion. I bought the old RV and started to get rid of things I didn’t need. By the time I left, I had downsized my life as much as possible, leaving a few things behind to figure out later, but I took everything I needed with me to live and work out of my RV. Location Spanning the state line between Nevada and California, 191-square-mile Lake Tahoe is surrounded by a mixed conifer forest and breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada. Bonsai Rock, located just off Tahoe’s eastern shore in Nevada, is approximately five and a half miles south of the town of Incline Village, which offers nearby camping facilities, food, lodging and recreational opportunities. Finding Bonsai Rock can be a challenge, as the spot isn’t marked. Approximately one mile south of the Sand Harbor Overlook, there’s a gravel turnoff on the lake side of Highway 28 from which the rock is barely visible through the trees. HOKKAIDO In Hokkaido, the northernmost of Japan’s four main islands, winter brings with it a thick blanket of snow but also creates an ideal rendezvous point for the endangered Japanese crane (Tancho) in Kushiro Shitsugen National Park. A Mouthful “European hamsters (Cricetus cricetus), sadly, are a threatened species nowadays,” notes Austrian-based photographer Henrik Spranz. “They’re much larger than the Syrian hamsters or dwarf hamsters, which are the ancestors of the well-known pet hamsters. The wild European hamsters are extinct or almost extinct in many European countries, but here in Austria you can still find them—even as urban wildlife. Like many children, Britta Jaschinski visited zoos as a young girl. But instead of squealing in delight at the sight of exotic wild animals, she felt anguish. “I couldn’t understand how anyone could have a nice day looking at animals in cages,” says Jaschinski. “As a child, I instinctively felt that it was wrong.” Born in Germany, Jaschinski moved to England as a young adult to further her career as a professional photographer. With her innate passion for wildlife, she deployed her photography skills to create her first book, Zoo, which called attention to the plight of captive wild animals. The word “photography” is a combination of the Greek root words “photo” and “graphia,” the former meaning light and the latter meaning writing. In a literal sense, photography is the art of writing with light. I think about this regularly when I’m shooting in a spectacular location. Too often, the light doesn’t cooperate and the “writing” is less than artistic. I arrive with incredible anticipation and leave with disappointment. Disappointment was the result of all of my prior visits to Bandon Beach on the Oregon Coast. Bandon is one of the most beautiful beaches in the United States and has become a mecca for landscape photographers. Going 250 miles south of Portland, you can reach Bandon Beach in 4.5 hours.
